Faded, patchy or tired?
We bring the colour back.

Factory-match re-colouring for furniture and automotive leather

Almost every leather problem starts or ends with colour. Sun fade, dye transfer, cleaning damage and general wear — we re-build the pigment layer on your exact panel and seal it so the new colour behaves like the original.

From $299 · Typically 5–15% of replacement cost

What we fix

Damage we see every week

If it's on this list, there's a high chance we can restore it without replacement — and at a fraction of the cost.

  • Sun-faded panels (top cushions, rear parcel shelves)
  • Jean-dye and ink transfer
  • Patchy areas from household cleaner damage
  • Light-coloured leather that has yellowed
  • Dye wash-out after DIY cleaning
  • Colour loss on contact zones (arms, head)
  • Uneven tone across a multi-panel suite

Process

Quote. Restore. Protect.

  1. 01

    Colour match

On-site dye match to your panel — never from a pre-mixed can.

  2. 02

    Prep

Clean, de-grease and lightly abrade to accept pigment.

  3. 03

    Pigment

Build colour in thin, even passes for depth and consistency.

  4. 04

    Seal

Matte, satin or gloss sealer to match the rest of the piece.

Why it happens

What causes leather to lose colour

Pigmented leather only loses colour for a handful of reasons — and almost all of them are reversible without replacing the panel. Here's what we see most often in Canberra furniture and cars.

Read: why does leather crack?
  • UV breakdown

Sunlight breaks down pigment molecules over time. North-facing windows in suburbs like Forrest, Manuka and Yarralumla are especially harsh on light-coloured furniture.

  • Cleaning product strip

Solvent-based cleaners and supermarket leather sprays dissolve the pigment layer. Often the result is patchy, uneven colour that looks worse than the original wear.

  • Skin and hair oils

Headrests, armrests and high-contact zones absorb oils that quietly dissolve pigment over years. The result is a darker, polished area that contrasts with the rest of the panel.

  • Dye transfer

New denim, throw rugs and pet collars all transfer dye into pigmented leather. Light interiors (cream, ivory, beige) are most vulnerable.

  • Heat damage

Hair dryers, hot pizza boxes and seat heaters can lift pigment in localised spots. We re-build the colour layer back in matched passes.

  • Cleaning + drying without conditioning

DIY cleaning that doesn't end with a conditioner accelerates pigment loss. The leather contracts, cracks and bleaches simultaneously.

Leather types we restore

Different leather, different approach.

Identifying the leather is the first thing we do on every job — the wrong product on the wrong leather can ruin a panel in minutes. Here's what we work with most often in Canberra homes and cars.

  • Full grain

The strongest, most natural-looking leather — used on premium couches and luxury car seats. Develops patina and responds beautifully to restoration.

  • Top grain

The most common furniture leather. Sanded and pigmented for consistency. Cracks and colour fades respond extremely well to recolouring.

  • Aniline & semi-aniline

Soft, dye-through leathers favoured by Italian and Scandinavian brands. Sensitive to UV and oils — usually needs gentle cleaning plus protective conditioner.

  • Pigmented (protected)

Coated leather with a colour film on top. The most durable and most repairable — colour matching gets it back to factory finish in nearly all cases.

  • Bonded leather

Composite material with a leather coating. Often peels rather than cracks. We can patch, recolour and seal small areas — but full panels eventually need recovering.

  • Nubuck & suede

Brushed-finish leathers. Cleaned with specialised foam and re-napped — never solvent-cleaned. Stains come out far more often than people expect.

Why it matters who you choose

Independent specialist
vs franchise network.

Most Canberra customers don't realise until the quote arrives that the national brand they just rang is a franchise — with franchise fees, a call centre and a variable local operator.

Franchise network

The usual experience

  • Franchise fees passed to clients
  • You deal with a call centre — not your technician
  • Quality varies by individual franchisee
  • Generic national products and processes

Questions we get

Questions — answered.

Don't see your question? Ask us directly →

  • Yes — within reason. Darkening is straightforward. Going dramatically lighter (black to cream) is possible but requires a full base coat rebuild, takes longer and costs more. Send photos and we'll advise.

  • Not with a properly applied topcoat. The Geist system is engineered to bond to the substrate and flex with the leather. With a sealer coat, the finish should wear like the factory original.

  • No. We use a pigment system that keeps the leather flexible. After conditioning, the panel feels identical to the unrestored areas.
