Process
Quote. Restore. Protect.
- 01
Strip
Failed lacquer layer removed using fine sanding — without touching the wood veneer beneath. The veneer is almost always intact in 90% of cases.
- 02
Repair
Micro-cracks and edge separations stabilised. Any cigarette burns or chemical marks filled and faired before colour goes on.
- 03
Stain match
Veneer colour-toned back to factory specification — burl walnut, eucalyptus, oak, ash, Shimamoku, bamboo, Olive ash. Matched against the trim code or a hidden panel.
- 04
Lacquer & UV-seal
Two-stage automotive lacquer (primer + topcoat), wet-sanded and polished to factory gloss. UV-protective topcoat seal designed to last 10+ years in ACT conditions.
Why it happens
Why wood trim fails in Canberra
Premium European cars use a thin polyester or acrylic lacquer layer over real wood veneer. The lacquer is what gives the wood its depth and shine. Canberra's UV intensity and 25–40°C summer cabin temperatures break down that lacquer over 8–12 years. Once it goes, the bare veneer oxidises and goes hazy, then crazes, then eventually delaminates. Most owners assume the wood is destroyed — it's not. The veneer underneath is perfectly intact in 90% of cases.
Read: why does leather crack?Mercedes-Benz
C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, CLS, GL, GLE, GLS — burl walnut, eucalyptus and ash. Faded dash, scratched console, hazy door inserts. We hold factory match data for every Mercedes wood code from 2002 onwards.
BMW
3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X5, X6 — oak, ash and poplar. Console wing nearest the driver always fades first because of the heated seat directly below.
Audi
A4, A6, A8, Q5, Q7, Q8 — walnut, oak, layered wood. The thin gloss lacquer used post-2012 is particularly prone to crazing. All restorable.
Range Rover & Land Rover
Sport, Vogue, Discovery, Velar — premium burr walnut and oak. Twelve-panel full-interior wood is common; we treat the set as one job.
Lexus
ES, GS, LS, RX, LX — Shimamoku, walnut, bamboo. The Shimamoku layered finish on the LS and LX is one of the most rewarding restorations we do.
Jaguar & Porsche
Jaguar XF, XJ, F-Pace — walnut burl and gloss black. Porsche Cayenne, Panamera, Macan — Olive ash and walnut. Plus classic and vintage Jaguar Mk2, Mercedes 280SL, classic Porsche, vintage BMW.
Pricing
From $299 —
no surprises.
Wood restoration is the highest-value job we do per panel — not because it's expensive, but because dealer replacement is so dramatic. A factory burl walnut dash + console set from a Range Rover dealer is $7,000–$9,000. We restore the same set for $749–$1,499 on-site or in-studio. All quotes firm and in writing before any work starts.

Why it matters who you choose
Independent specialist
vs franchise network.
Most Canberra customers don't realise until the quote arrives that the national brand they just rang is a franchise — with franchise fees, a call centre and a variable local operator.

Send a photo now →Almost certainly yes. The crazing you see is in the lacquer layer, not the wood. The veneer underneath is intact in roughly 90% of the cars we look at. Send a photo and we'll confirm before you commit to anything.
Burl is the gnarled, swirled grain pattern that comes from a tree's burl growth — it's the premium wood used on Range Rover Vogue, Bentley, top-trim Mercedes S-Class. Harder to colour-match than straight-grain walnut, but we hold factory match data for all the common burl finishes.
Yes. We mix to your specific car using either the trim code on the build sticker, or by colour-matching against a hidden panel (the inside of a glovebox lid is the usual reference). We've restored mid-90s Mercedes wood that hasn't been available from the dealer in 20 years.
Yes — Jaguar Mark 2, Mercedes 280SE and 280SL, classic Porsche, vintage BMW. The same process applies. We've worked on a number of concours-prep cars where the wood needed to read original from 12 inches.
