A worn or shiny steering wheel ages the whole interior. Leather, vinyl, soft-touch or painted: we strip the polished, contaminated or peeling top layer, repair the surface, recolour it to the factory shade and seal it with a Geist topcoat — 1–2 hours, on-site.

Why it happens
Why steering wheels wear faster than the rest of the car
The steering wheel is the only piece of leather you touch every single drive. It absorbs more skin oil, sunscreen and UV than any other panel — usually showing wear 5–8 years before the seats do.

Hand creams, sunscreens and natural skin oils dissolve the protective topcoat. The leather underneath gets exposed and polishes shiny.
UV at 9 and 3 o'clock
Driving with the same hand position for years concentrates sun damage on the same two arcs. We rebuild colour evenly across the whole wheel.
Cracking on thumb pads
Constant micro-flex at the thumb position dries out the leather. Thumb-pad cracks are one of the most common automotive jobs we see.
Tacky, sticky topcoat
Old wheels (often 8+ years) develop a sticky residue as the original topcoat breaks down. We strip it cleanly and apply a fresh sealer.
Peeling coatings
Soft-touch and painted rims lift in flakes once the bond fails, usually at the spokes first. We strip the loose coating back to a sound edge, level it and refinish the whole rim.
Colour fade
Dark wheels go grey, tan wheels go pale, and the rim stops matching the seats. Recolouring the full wheel to the factory shade puts the cabin back to one colour.

Leather types we restore
Different leather, different approach.
Identifying the leather is the first thing we do on every job — the wrong product on the wrong leather can ruin a panel in minutes. Here's what we work with most often in Canberra homes and cars.
Full grain
The strongest, most natural-looking leather — used on premium couches and luxury car seats. Develops patina and responds beautifully to restoration.
Top grain
The most common furniture leather. Sanded and pigmented for consistency. Cracks and colour fades respond extremely well to recolouring.
Aniline & semi-aniline
Soft, dye-through leathers favoured by Italian and Scandinavian brands. Sensitive to UV and oils — usually needs gentle cleaning plus protective conditioner.
Pigmented (protected)
Coated leather with a colour film on top. The most durable and most repairable — colour matching gets it back to factory finish in nearly all cases.
Bonded leather
Composite material with a leather coating. Often peels rather than cracks. We can patch, recolour and seal small areas — but full panels eventually need recovering.
Nubuck & suede
Brushed-finish leathers. Cleaned with specialised foam and re-napped — never solvent-cleaned. Stains come out far more often than people expect.
