Cracking leather?
Catch it early. Pay less.
Surface crack repair before it becomes a tear
Leather cracks don't stop on their own. Once the topcoat starts breaking, every day of use makes the substrate dryer and the crack deeper. Most early-stage cracks can be fixed for a fraction of what a full restoration costs — if you catch them.
From $175 · Typically 5–15% of replacement cost

Why it happens
What actually makes leather crack
Cracks aren't caused by one thing — they're caused by a chain of stress on the topcoat. Understanding the chain is half the battle to stopping cracks before they spread.
Read: why does leather crack?Dehydration
When natural oils evaporate faster than they're replaced, the leather goes brittle. Canberra winters under 30% indoor humidity are the most common driver.
Topcoat flex fatigue
The protective film on top of pigmented leather is plastic. Sit on it 20 times a day for ten years and microscopic cracks appear — they grow into visible cracks.
UV exposure
UV breaks down the bonds in pigment and sealer. Once degraded, the topcoat can't flex any more — it cracks at the first stress point.
Body oils
Headrest and armrest cracking is almost always oil-driven. Skin oils dissolve the protective topcoat over years until the underlying leather is exposed.
Wrong cleaning products
Multipurpose sprays strip the protective layer in minutes. The leather underneath dries out, contracts and cracks within months — not years.
Mechanical stress at folds
Recliner mechanisms, button tufting and bolster folds bend leather repeatedly. Without conditioning, cracks always start at the fold lines first.
Pricing
From $175 —
no surprises.
Spot crack repairs from $175. If cracking is spread across multiple panels, a full couch or lounge restoration is usually more cost-effective than crack-by-crack — we'll advise honestly.

Leather types we restore
Different leather, different approach.
Identifying the leather is the first thing we do on every job — the wrong product on the wrong leather can ruin a panel in minutes. Here's what we work with most often in Canberra homes and cars.
Full grain
The strongest, most natural-looking leather — used on premium couches and luxury car seats. Develops patina and responds beautifully to restoration.
Top grain
The most common furniture leather. Sanded and pigmented for consistency. Cracks and colour fades respond extremely well to recolouring.
Aniline & semi-aniline
Soft, dye-through leathers favoured by Italian and Scandinavian brands. Sensitive to UV and oils — usually needs gentle cleaning plus protective conditioner.
Pigmented (protected)
Coated leather with a colour film on top. The most durable and most repairable — colour matching gets it back to factory finish in nearly all cases.
Bonded leather
Composite material with a leather coating. Often peels rather than cracks. We can patch, recolour and seal small areas — but full panels eventually need recovering.
Nubuck & suede
Brushed-finish leathers. Cleaned with specialised foam and re-napped — never solvent-cleaned. Stains come out far more often than people expect.

Why it matters who you choose
Independent specialist
vs franchise network.
Most Canberra customers don't realise until the quote arrives that the national brand they just rang is a franchise — with franchise fees, a call centre and a variable local operator.
Franchise network
The usual experience
- Franchise fees passed to clients
- You deal with a call centre — not your technician
- Quality varies by individual franchisee
- Generic national products and processes
- Response time depends on territory operator

Send a photo now →Not if the leather is conditioned and protected properly. Cracks return when the underlying leather is still dry and the topcoat gets stretched. Our repair conditions the substrate first, then rebuilds the topcoat — so the repaired panel flexes again.
Almost never. A crack repair is typically 2–5% of a new lounge. Even a full restoration runs 5–15%. Unless the frame is broken, repair is the smarter financial decision.
Send photos. If the small cracks are spread across the surface, a whole-cushion re-coat often costs the same as fixing the big one alone — and resets the whole cushion for years.
